In Surfside, a man's recklessness almost cost him his own manhood when he accidentally discharged his firearm in the bathroom of Flanigan's restaurant. The incident highlights the upcoming permitless carry law that's soon to be implemented in Florida. Despite being questioned by the police, the man admitted he hadn't had time to apply for a concealed carry permit, but believed he was allowed to carry his gun in public due to the new gun legislation. However, the law doesn't go into effect for another two months, on July 1.
Flanagan's is a popular restaurant chain among locals, known for its late-night atmosphere and cops on-site. Although Surfside police assured the public that the town was safe, a bullet from a 380 ACP Taurus gun was found on the floor of the Flanigan's bathroom, and nearby was a bullet hole inside a stall. The man was arrested and booked on a felony charge of carrying a concealed firearm without a permit.
Under the new law, people won't be required to undergo a background check or take a firearms training course before carrying concealed guns around town. This means that individuals who purchase firearms through private sales will be able to carry concealed guns in public without undergoing safety courses or background checks. Although private businesses can still ban firearms on their premises, local governments in the state have no power to pass ordinances restricting where people can carry firearms due to the preemption law.
Despite the incident, a waitress at a nearby restaurant expressed her surprise that someone would carry a loaded gun inside a restaurant. On the other hand, the owner of another business nearby maintains her belief in the right to bear arms.
This incident serves as a reminder that just because a law allows for something doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea to take advantage of it. It's essential for individuals to exercise more caution and responsibility when it comes to carrying firearms in public for everyone's safety.
