In a recent incident in Miami, a Hialeah Police officer was hit by a stolen motorcycle during a routine traffic stop. The officer, now in recovery following surgery, sustained injuries when the rider purportedly attempted to escape. The accused appeared in court the next day.
The defendant, Roberto Ortiz, faced Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy Glazer, who set his bond at $30,000 on Monday. Ortiz was arrested on charges of eluding and fleeing.
The incident unfolded when Officer Delgado attempted to stop Ortiz near East Fourth Avenue and 49th Street in Hialeah. According to the authorities, as Ortiz tried to escape, Delgado grabbed him by the shoulder. Ortiz then reportedly sped up, dragging Delgado into the police car.
Delgado was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery due to fractures and torn ligaments in his knee.
Ortiz, meanwhile, allegedly fled from the scene but was later apprehended by the police. At the time of the incident, Ortiz was out on felony bond related to another case. Following this recent event, he is once again in custody.
A lawyer in the courtroom stated, "The allegations are the defendant was on a stolen motorcycle and he has an open case for grand theft auto."
Even though Ortiz's bond has been set, he will continue to be held in custody at least until Tuesday due to a violation of his prior probation terms related to the other felony.
